That’s right, the reach of computers has now entered the realm of bass fishing – you can’t escape them. Old timers might not like the idea that bass are somehow related to computers. That’s not the way we did it, right? Well, have you ever kept a log when you fished for bass? Many old timers did; in fact, that was considered a mark of the dedicated bass fisherman, that he studied out his prey. You probably had a notebook in which you jotted down such information as the bass’ depths when you were catching them. You were sure to record the cover you found there, and you must have jotted down which your of lures or bait did the trick. You kept these logs for each trip and often referred to them when fishing the same place. You were collecting information, old timer, something computers do too.

Sure, there are some who can remember everything when they went bass fishing, remember the time of day they made their catch, and maybe the lures shape, weight, color, & leader length, but, unless you just go once a year, you’ve probably made many catches at many places throughout your bass fishing career and it’s hard to remember them all. That’s why you kept a log. That’s what a computer can do for you too, keep a log.

With laptop computers now available, there’s no reason to keep that paper log that probably has a water stain on every page, bait juice, maybe even a spot or two of bass blood. The thing is hard to read now. Get the information into a laptop and there will no more unreadable entries to plague you again.

What, just make a document, you ask. Sure, you could do that, but there’s an even better way of keeping records of your fishing excursions. You can create your own log on the internet. There the “Fisherman’s Log”, essentially an online database for bass fishing. You can easily enter information on spots you’ve fished for bass. You bring up the page and record the details of your bass fishing for the day. But you can also view other fishermen’s logs, quite a useful feature when you visit places you’ve never been before. You just search for the fish you’re after and a report tells you everything you’ll need for that day. You can even get predictions based on the data already collected. Good way to select the next spot. It’ll suggest lures to use, at what depth they’ve been caught, best time of day, and the best bait to use. You can find out how the fish respond to baitfish activity in general. You can find even more general information, such as their spawning habits.

Because bass follow consistant habits, knowing how they’ll behave gives you an advantage. At least you won’t be relying totally on lady luck. You’ll have computer information, and it’s information that can put you over the top. Get online now, and find out how, when bass fishing, information sinks the hook.

FISHING RIGS

Remember the chase is better than the catch. As much as you would show off having caught rare variety of fish, it is sport worth playing anyway. The classic tussle between man and nature is a process worth enjoying by itself. The designing of the proper type of rigs is important to suit your fishing needs. Here are some important explanations:

LONG CAST RIG

Going with the flow efficiently is whole objective of this designing. Long cast rigs are primarily aimed towards lowering their resistance to water flow and cutting in with speed and effect. The same as the purpose of the jet design in air.

The lead line must be adjusted to as low in diameter as would insurable for safety. Even the bait should be streamlined. Use of clips to tighten the baits in common as otherwise they would dangle in water freely.

SPINNING RIGS

If you tend to use rubber lures then you know that they don’t hold down very far because of their low weights. In this design there are two swivels attached with one addition of a link swivel. You may explore the design with adjusting the trace length of the lure. The weight is provided by a bullet which can be drilled through or you can slip up something on the lead line.

CONGER FISHING RIG

Conger eels are rare species but experts may tell you if they are worth a shot in some areas nearby. This uses traces of wire on which the hook is attached. You can find such readymade wires in any good place.

PATERNOSTERS

This is a very common rig used in most places. One suggestion in design is stick the swivel in the 2 beads. If the conventional swivel and another link swivel seem too much then you may just replace it with a link. Be careful about the use of too many snoods as it may cause them to jam in with each other, which is a troublesome affair to repair.

PENNEL RIG

This is a fairly simple way of attaching two hooks in vertical ascendance. Smaller hook is attached on the top and larger at the bottom. The proportion is based on the understanding that hook size should be based on the bait size which in turn is based on expected fish catching. But the hooks meant for cods cannot catch whiting and other fishes of different size. Therefore the second hook is used to solve this problem. In case the larger fish fail to bite on the smaller hooks, the larger hooks prove useful.

RUNNING LEDGERS

Many of the fish varieties are rather shy and they will literally shy away from the bait if they feel any external resistance on the line. Running ledgers can handle this problem. These rigs are great at catching hold of the fish firmly once the bite on is made. If you intend to catch conger or tope varieties of fish then you may want to replace the snood with a wire for strength.

DROPPER RIGS

This particular type of rig is best used with kites and on clear beaches with lots of space and winds. It can be used to suit your personal needs and is very changeable for different conditions and fish varieties.

Macks Lure has introduced a new ‘hybrid spinner’ call hummbait. The unique lure is designed to attract fish with noise, vibration & appearance. This lure can be used for several different fishing techniques from casting, to buzzbait or even trolling.

HummBaits comes in three different sizes: 1/4 oz. (Minnow), 3/8 oz. (Smelts), and 1/2 oz. (Shad). Prices range from $3.29 to $3.99. You can pick them up at MacksLure.com or perhaps even find a deal at ebay

By Corinne Springdale During the months of May, June, and July, a great many anglers in the Gulf Coast region head to the beach to snare the Speckle Trout. The Speckle Trout is a large trout, silver in color with olive-green tinting. The “speckle” is given by the many small black dots that extend from its dorsal fin down to the tail. Commonly, the Speckle Trout is between 14 to 18 inches long, and weighs between one to three pounds. Its lower jaw is generally more prominent than its upper jaw and its mouth encapsulates two canine teeth. Speckle Trout prefer small crustaceans, shrimp, and small fish for their diets.

In April, the Speckle Trout move to shallower waters for reproduction and feeding. They will be in large schools at this point in the year. Speckle Trout generally hang out near drop-offs, near the safe haven of deeper waters. They also use any kind of cover, such as bridges, rock piles and even docked boats. A quiet approach is needed so as to not spook the fish, but it is rare that you spot them before they spot you. The best way to hook a Speckle Trout is to wadefish, as a boat makes too much noise. A long cast will keep the distance between you and the fish, making you harder for the fish to detect. Employ slow retrieve tactics to bring your fish in. As a general rule, big trout are a lazy bunch. Use big bait with medium shrimp being the best option as they stay active on the hook a while longer than the larger varieties. Loud surface lures are a good option as well, as the more noise your bait makes, the more trout will be attracted. Once hooked, a great deal of care is needed when handling the Speckle Trout. They are much less tolerant on the catch and release then their redfish counterparts. Wet your hands before handling your catch, and use a de-hooking device if at all possible. Touch them as little as possible to make your release successful. Good luck and good fishing!

When you decide to purchase a new boat, you may be unaware of the literally thousands of different accessory items available to make your boat more stylish, easier and/or safer to use or more fun. You’ll get an inkling if you purchase your boat from a marine dealer, as they will undoubtedly try to sell you as many add-ons as possible.

What types of accessories help protect your investment and keep your boat looking newer longer? The most obvious one is a boat cover. If you remember the days of old heavy canvas boat covers, fear not….the new ones are lightweight, water resistant and quite easy to attach. It is best to purchase a boat cover that the manufacturer recommends. It may cost a little more, but it will save you time, frustration and ultimately provide you with a much better boating experience. So called “universal” covers or off-brand covers may say they are designed to fit your boat, but they usually will have some fit issues which will cause them to “bubble up” with wind or have other problems while travelling. A good boat cover keeps your boat cushions and carpeting from suffering sun and rain damage. If you are having trouble justifying the cost, remember how much a new boat costs. If you consider your boat a long-term investment, it’s really a no brainer. Another added benefit is that you can carry a lot of items in your boat while travelling, without fear of losing them. . This can be very handy for vacations. Don’t forget, if your boat cover requires bungee cord tie downs, be sure so use the fabric and plastic covered variety so as not to scratch your boat.

There’s another accessory that can keep your boat looking newer longer. This is one of the simplest protections that most people don’t have, or even think of; and that is boat bumpers or boat fenders. They come in various sizes, depending on the size of your boat, but most are cylindrical shaped and they can be easily attached to the rope cleats as you approach the dock. Most bumpers are made of vinyl or plastic and some are inflatable. When not in use, they can be easily stored in your boat’s cargo areas. Depending on size and quality, you can buy bumpers for as little as $10, but most are $20-$40. If you have a larger boat and need quite a few bumpers, you can make them at home. There are some descriptive articles on the internet that provide instructions. A few dollars spent here can easily save the frustration of a scratch on your new boat.

Remember that when it comes to accessories, you’re unlikely to be sorry you bought something that keeps your boat looking like new.

Fly fishing can be a wonderful and relaxing sport, but it can be tough for the beginner to get started. Compared to other outdoor sports, fly fishing can have a bit of a learning curve, and it is always a good idea to find an experienced fisherman or fisherwoman who can help you get started right.

One of the most important considerations for new fly fisherman is gathering the right gear. The right equipment is essential to success in any sport, and fly fishing is certainly no exception. Again, the help of an experienced old pro can help you to find the right equipment at the right price.

It all starts, of course, with the right fly rod, and an experienced sportsman can help the beginner choose the perfect new or used rod. It can take a trained eye to spot a quality fly rod, and it is important to do plenty of research before heading out.

Experienced fishermen will also tell you how important it is to keep a spare fly rod on hand. Accidents can and do happen, and having a spare rod on hand can help the beginner salvage a long planned fishing trip.

A tackle box full of spare flies will be a big help as well. Tying a quality fly takes time, especially for the beginner. Having a well stocked supply of spare flies will help you to spend more time fishing and less time tying.

When it comes to fly fishing apparel the clothes definitely make the man (or woman). First on the list of must have equipment is a quality pair of wading boots. Fly fishermen spend an inordinate amount of time in the water, and newcomers will definitely appreciate the comfort a quality pair of boots can provide.

Of course you will also need plenty of other accessories to complete the package, including a good wader belt, long underwear for those cold mornings and plenty of extra socks for your comfort. Sunglasses are a must as well, especially if you will be fishing in the heat of the day. And don’t forget the sunscreen and the mosquito spray.
